Google Page Rank Explained

By Bruce Alan at 2011-02-14 04:47:38

The concept is simple; page rank allows the most important websites to appear at the top of search results. Although you may have seen complicated theories of how page rank works, illustrated by stupendously complicated mathematical formulas, you do not need to be a genius to understand the basic principles.

As well as increasing the quantity of links to your website you should also try to get your links on high quality web pages. This means getting your link on pages that are ranked as high or higher than yours. When you do this some of their page rank can be transferred to you which ultimately helps increase the page rank of your site.

Nevertheless, the main point to take from this is that the higher the PR a web page is given, then often and generally speaking, it will be difficult to outrank this page if it appears on the first page of Google for the keywords we are trying to rank for. Keep in mind, this is a general rule, not a be-all-end-all foregone conclusion.

I have seen sites selling a simple text link on their home page for over $700 a month purely based on the fact that they have a PR of 7 or above. This may seem like a lot of money but when you consider that the website owners that are buying these links often have websites that are in no way relevant to the content of the site linking to them, it is absolutely ridiculous.

As soon as Google introduced the concept of page rank unsavory webmasters developed ways to manipulate the rankings. These webmasters began creating web pages with the sole purpose of increasing the amount of incoming links pointing to their website.

One of the most effective ways to increase your perceived importance with Google is when other important sites think you are important. This is not really a new concept and we see this in advertising all the time. Companies pay 'important people' to endorse their products and the thought behind it is that if this important person finds the product useful then it must be good.

The answer is no. The minimum PR will remain on the page as it is the least value any indexed page can have. The total amount of distributed PR will be divided by the total number of out going links and each links will carry the divided value to their target. This is the way PR is distributed from a web page through out going links.

Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."
