Developing a Creative 404 Error Page By Bruce Alan at 2011-02-10 03:25:57

The custom 404 error page is very important for the website to attract more users & increase the web traffic. 'HTTP 404 error' we get when an invalid or wrong URL is requested in the web server. When the user request a webpage the request is sent through HTTP from client to server, the webs server will return a status code of the request through the HTTP header.
This is a text file placed in the root directory of your website (same location as the index.html file). The code placed in this file redirects visitors who clicked on broken links or mistyped your web address to the error404.html page.
Having a beautifully designed website but a generic 404 error page is like forgetting to paint a room in your home. Taking the time to make your 404 error page user friendly will let your visitors know you were concerned about your appearance and about making their experience on your site as simple as possible.
The solution to this is the creation of a custom error page, usually named 404.htm. When this page is extant on the server, instead of a File Not Found error being returned, the 404.htm file is returned. It can be thought of as a "catch-all" page, that is displayed when no file corresponding to the file called upon in the address bar exists.
Lot of graphics also increases your bandwidth usage. The web sites are continually attacked by viruses. If you have a good web logger and check it once in a while you will see some hundreds of page requests with '404 errors'. All these 404 errors drain your bandwidth. So keep an eye on size of error pages.

My personal opinion is to display the page but have key elements on the page, such as a logo or look and feel of your website, along with a message saying that the page they are looking for was not found but click here to go to the home page of your website.
Now you’ve change the .htaccess file you need to create the page. This is simply a normal HTML document. Once you’ve created the HTML document, save it and call it 404page.html. Now the next step is to upload the .htaccess file and the page to the server.
